Why it has to be a PNG

A JPG cannot be transparent. Whatever was behind the subject is part of every pixel, so the only way to lose it is to cut the subject out and save it in a format that can hold nothing at all.

That format is PNG. This tool removes the background and hands you a PNG at your image's own size, so you can put it on a website, a slide, a product listing or a shirt and only the subject comes with it.

Cut for print, not just the screen

On screen, a soft pale rim round a cut-out is invisible. Printed on a dark shirt it comes out as a white outline. This is the cut Merchu uses for its own DTF transfers: the rim is peeled off and the edge kept crisp, so what you download prints the way it looks.

Making a transparent PNG

How do I make an image transparent?
Drop it in and create a free account. The background is removed straight away and you download a PNG with a transparent background.
Can I turn a JPG into a transparent PNG?
Yes. Drop the JPG in and you download a PNG with the background removed, the same size as your JPG up to 4096 pixels on the longest side.
Why PNG and not WebP?
WebP can be transparent too, but PNG is the format every app, printer and website accepts, so that is what you download.
Is it free?
Yes, with a free Merchu account. An AI cut uses 1 token and a free account gets 100 tokens every month. Removing a plain coloured background is free.
Will it lose quality?
No. The only thing that changes is the transparency: every pixel you keep is your own, not a redrawn copy. The PNG is the size of your image, up to 4096 pixels on the longest side.
Are my images stored?
A solid colour cut never leaves your browser. For an AI cut a copy of your image goes to our AI provider, and it is deleted from our storage as soon as the background is removed. The finished PNG is made in your browser either way.
