Three ways to cut it
Remove with AI is for photos, products, pets and busy backgrounds. The AI finds the subject and its edge, and the colours stay your own pixels. It uses 1 token a cut.
Remove solid colour is for artwork on a plain background. It takes the colour away from around the design and leaves anything inside it alone. Free.
Remove all solid colour also clears that colour inside the design, like the middle of an O or the gaps in a logo. Free.
Cut for print, not just the screen
On screen, a soft pale rim round a cut-out is invisible. Printed on a dark shirt it comes out as a white outline. This is the cut Merchu uses for its own DTF transfers: the rim is peeled off and the edge kept crisp, so what you download prints the way it looks.

Background remover questions
- Is the background remover free?
- Yes, with a free Merchu account. Removing a solid colour background costs nothing, and an AI cut uses 1 token. A free account gets 100 tokens every month, so that is up to 100 AI cuts a month without paying.
- Do I need an account?
- Yes, a free one, with email or Google. Drop your image in first: it waits while you sign up and the cut runs as soon as you are back.
- How big can my image be?
- The PNG you download is the size of your image, up to 4096 pixels on the longest side. A bigger image comes back at 4096.
- What file do I get?
- A PNG with a transparent background, named after your file. Put it in Canva, Photoshop, Cricut Design Space or a gang sheet and the background is simply not there.
- Will it lose quality?
- No. The only thing that changes is the transparency: every pixel you keep is your own, not a redrawn copy. The PNG is the size of your image, up to 4096 pixels on the longest side.
- Are my images stored?
- A solid colour cut never leaves your browser. For an AI cut a copy of your image goes to our AI provider, and it is deleted from our storage as soon as the background is removed. The finished PNG is made in your browser either way.
- Should I use AI or solid colour?
- Solid colour for logos, text and artwork on a plain background: it is free and keeps fine detail. AI for photos, products and anything on a busy background. You can try both on the same image.
- Can I print it on a t-shirt?
- Yes, that is what the cut is tuned for. Send it straight to a DTF gang sheet and we print it in Sheffield, posted the same working day when you order before 1:30pm.
- What is a token?
- Merchu's unit for anything that runs on AI. A free account gets 100 every month; paid plans get more and can top up.
